Coming soon to the Triangle is Google Fiber, a new internet provider which aims to challenge such as Time Warner Cable.

The company’s goal is to provide internet services 10 times faster than companies today and possible Triangle-wide free wifi.

Google Fiber’s main service is a television service, which will include 150 channels as well as movies and shows on demand.

It says it will provide the fastest wireless internet currently available.

Google fiber couldvastly improve the internet speed across the entire area, and help not only businesses but also residences in the Raleigh- Durham area.

Since Google fiber technology is fairly new, the only three current “fiber cities” are Provo, Utah; Kansas City, Missouri; and Austin, Texas.

Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Raleigh- Durham area are the four upcoming fiber cities that Google will come to to set up in the coming years.

The coverage will also branch out to nearby cities like areas around the Triangle such as Carrboro, Morrisville, Cary, Raleigh, and Garner.

Google Fiber “huts” set up throughout Raleigh and will be connected to fiber cables which will go between utility poles throughout neighborhoods.

The fiber internet will run through a series of larger cables allowing less compression and supposedly faster speeds.

The Raleigh/Durham area was chosen for Google Fiber because of its high standard of living and high volume business climate, according to the company’s announcement. Google fiber’s aim is to spread its new provisions all across the country with hopes of challenging broadband companies.

Google Fiber is expected to speed up television and internet connection speed, provide Triangle-wide wifi, and overall provide competition for current cable and internet network providers.

No date has been announced for the start of service. First, Google Fiber must install thousands of miles of fiber throughout the area. There is yet no timeline for when construction will begin or when Google Fiber will be available.
