Spring break make-up days cause controversy

On Saturday, March 7, 2015, Wake County Public School System announced that three of the eight school days missed for school will be made up on March 23, 24, and 25, the first three days of Spring Break. This announcement came after WCPSS previously released a message that these days would be made up on Good Friday, a Saturday in April, and a Saturday in May.

Following this announcement, many students, parents, and teachers of WCPSS declared their unhappiness with this decision. They expressed their feelings that WCPSS initially promised to keep spring break safe and that, by making all three make-up days over spring break, is disrupting many families’ plans for the week. Additionally, families affected by this decision are displeased that on the WCPSS calendar, the snow make-up days are listed as being at the end of the year.

To protest WCPSS’s decision, a petition has been made to “save spring break.” So far, it has more than 4,000 signatures, and counting.
