A fight to the rim

The Broughton lady Caps basketball team is off to a hot start of 3-1 with wins over Fuquay- Varina, Green Hope, and Lee County. Their one loss coming to Hillside. With coaches Brad McCorkle, Alex Slater, Sheree Bates, Rachael Shelton, and Becky Davis along with three new players and NC State commit Kaila Ealey, the lady Caps are expecting nothing short of success.

“We have very high hope for the season”, said junior Brittney Smith, “we all have one common goal and that’s a state championship. We have the talent, hard work, and belief that we can achieve anything we put our minds to.” With 37 points in their win over Green Hope on Decem- ber 2nd, and averaging 23.7 points, 5.7 assists, and 8.0 rebounds per game over the first three games, Kaila Ealey is the lady Caps starting point guard.

“She’s a great leader, and so talented”, said Smith, “With her being a year older than me I can really look up to her and learn a lot from her leadership and game in general.”

Coming off a 20-4 season, the Lady Caps were devastated when losing in the third round of last year’s state playoffs. “It was really disappointing”, said senior Josie Rouse, “we had so much talent, and we knew we had such a good chance to go all the way” Though disappointed, the lady Caps would keep their heads high and use their disappointment as motivation into the next season.

“We lost a lot of talent last year”, said Rouse, “but the team no doubt has more chemistry this year and we’ll use that to our advantage. We have high expectations and know we have what it takes to achieve our goals.” The team’s chemistry is present not just on the court but off the court as well. “I think my favorite part about being on the team is being with my teammates in the locker room, on the bus, and on the court of course”, said Smith, “we have a lot of fun and everyone gets along really well.” Though the Lady Caps have a lot of fun off the court, they still maintain determination and focus when it’s time to do business. “Millbrook is the game we all have circled on our schedules”, said Smith, “I can’t wait for that one”. The lady Caps began conference play on December 12 at Heritage, they play a total of 20 regular season games, all of which will be played with much intensity and determination
