Under the leadership of head coach Chris Dawson, the Broughton football team has become a force to be reckoned with, despite its somewhat rag tag beginnings. But with the current pandemic, what does this mean for the team? To get some answers, Dawson was interviewed to get insight on the future of the season. 

“What is the football team’s motto this year in the midst of the uncertainty of the school year and season?”

Our motto is always “Work Hard.  Have Fun.  Take Care of Each Other.”  Effort, attitude, and empathy are three things we can control no matter what is going on around us, and controlling those three things has never been more important than right now.  If we can work our hardest, have a great attitude, and treat people with love and respect, not only can we have a great season on the field, but we can make a positive impact on our community.

“When do you plan on resuming workouts/have you already this year?”

We have been conducting virtual workouts and meetings since April, and I’ve been happy with our attendance numbers.  Attendance is even better now that school is back in session.  I’m not entirely sure when we will be able to workout at Boughton again.  I’m anticipating a return in December or January.

“Will the roster be impacted due to the limited practices and limited space at those practices?”

I hope not.  We have one of the largest programs in the state.  Last year we had 130 players between JV and Varsity, and this year we have had 140 attend virtual workouts.  That being said, no one is quite sure yet what the rules will be regarding locker rooms and travelling on buses, so there’s a chance we may have to make some hard choices.

“How are you navigating the logistics of the restrictions due to the pandemic?”

Because we haven’t been able to workout or practice in person, we haven’t had to navigate anything.  I know that when we resume in person workouts, practices, and games there will be a lot of precautions that we’ve never taken before, and some of them will be incredibly inconvenient.  That being said, it’s a price I’m willing to pay in order to have a season AND keep our players, coaches, and families safe.

“How are you encouraging team bonding, something that you have prioritized during your time coaching here at Broughton?”

The bonds that players form on a football team is probably the single best thing the sport gives to those who participate.  The hardest part about being away from each other for the last 7 months has been the toll it’s taken on our connections.  We’ve done our best to create virtual bonding with team competitions and meetings.  Since school started in August, we have a Football Friday meeting each week, and all players and coaches attend.  Our coaches have also called all 140 players on the roster to make sure they’re doing OK.

“What are you most looking forward to this season?”

Seeing our guys again and giving them all great big hugs (with masks on, of course).
