Heart O’ the Hills is an all-girls summer camp located in Hunt, Texas, where girls challenge their true potential and heighten their standards. For about a month, girls leave their families and go off to experience memories for a lifetime that they’ll never forget. On July 4, 2025, a tragic event occurred where the Guadalupe River rose, reaching new levels and breaking rainfall records. Sadly, the camp was affected by the catastrophic flooding, depleting 17 cabins and resulting in the deaths of more than 60 people, including beloved camp director Jane Ragsdale, according to People Magazine.
Jane Ragsdale was in her late 60s and had a deep love and appreciation for the campgrounds. She grew up in Kerr County, Texas, and was a local to the campsite at a young age. Her love for the camp was poured onto all the other girls around and created a steady foundation of love for each session of camp. The love for the camp and for each girl in the cabin was not washed away by the flood, but sadly, the camp was destroyed due to the dangerous and intense natural disaster that occurred.
“I flew into Texas on July 2nd, ready to go into my session and so excited to go back to the place I love, ” senior Judith Matthews said. “Finding out that my second home was torn apart saddened me, and finding out Jane passed away made me even more sad.” Judith started to attend Heart O’ the Hills all-girls camp when she was 10 and has gone every year since. She loved this camp more than anything because it reminded her of home and a place where she felt her best.
Even though the camp is currently shut down and campers are sad, the camp has done many things to help rebuild the community that was previously there. For example, the camp sold t-shirts that went for 30 dollars, and all the proceeds went to a fundraiser to assist in the remodeling of the campgrounds. The shirts read “Texas Hill County Strong” on the front, and on the back, it has the state of Texas outlined, and inside the state, it says “Pray for the lost. Pray for the missing” and has a heart where the camp was located.
