The image taken of Bernie Sanders sitting alone, wearing patterned mittens on inauguration day has taken over the internet. As the Vermont senator sat on Capitol Hill awaiting the swearing-in of the 46th United States President,  Joe Biden, little did he know that all eyes would be on him. Tons of photoshopped memes of this image have been shared and reposted all over social media, showing Sanders as characters in movies, famous pictures, paintings, funny scenarios, and more.

When interviewed by Seth Myers on his talk show, Sanders let Myers know that he is aware of all the memes and that he is amused by them. Bernie had also previously shared who the creator of the fancy mittens was, and only hours after they were seen on live television, she had tweeted how thankful she was that Bernie wore them and all the attention they were grabbing. Unfortunately, she informed her fans that she had just made those as a Christmas gift for him and no others were for sale.

During the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries and caucuses, Broughton’s Holliday Gym hosted a rally, put on by Pete Buttigieg. Bernie’s campaign made it to Charlotte, Durham, and St. Augustine’s University, but never made it to Broughton for a rally. Could this have been a reason as to why he did not win the Democratic primary election? The world may never know.
