Caps lax lacks losses

The Broughton Men’s Lacrosse team has begun their 2015 campaign with a 1-1 start. A two goal loss to powerhouse Pope High School from Marietta, Georgia, and a dominating victory over Cap-8 opponent, Enloe. The Caps are determined to bounce back from last year’s loss to East Chapel Hill High School in the 3rd round of the state playoffs.

“Last year’s finish was definitely a disappointment”, said senior captain Zach Burgess, “We know we could’ve made a better run in the state playoffs and that’s what we’re determined to do this year.”

The Caps are looking for their tough, experienced defense to step up for them again this year led behind Joey Moore, and Jack Williams.

“The experience and leadership our defense contains is something our guys will defiantly use to their advantage”, said assistant defensive coordinator John Hawthorne, “We’ve always had a solid defense and this year will be no different.”

While there are many veterans on the team, a new face, freshman Davis Willard hopes to help contribute to the team’s goals this year.

“My goal, along with everyone else on the team, is to bring a state championship back to Broughton”, said Willard, “with our focus, talent, and dedication, we all believe it can happen.”

One team standing in between the Caps and their dream of a state championship is the Leesville Wildcats.

“The Leesville home game is definitely one we all have circled on our schedules”, said Burgess, “They’re one of our biggest rivals so losing is not an option.”

While the team is focused and dedicated on the field, they also have a strong brotherhood off the field.

“I think one of my favorite parts about being on the team is just hanging out with the guys. On the field, in the locker room, or outside of Broughton, our team is really close and we’re always having a good time.”

The Caps continue conference play at Leesville on Tuesday, March 17th, then don’t resume play until after spring break at Sanderson on Thursday, April 2nd.
